Pick Tahir at Newlands - Gogga

Cape Town - Former Proteas spinner Paul "Gogga" Adams has called for leg-spinner Imran Tahir's inclusion in South Africa's team for the first Test against Australia at Newlands.

Adams told the Rapport newspaper that there's "no doubt" that Tahir should be utilised ahead of Paul Harris for the Test in Cape Town on November 9.

"Imran deserves a chance because we need someone that can claim four or five wickets, even if he concedes a couple of runs.

"Harris has had numerous chances, but failed to do much recently to justify his inclusion," said Adams.

Adams says he also won't take the risk of picking both Tahir and Harris - even though a turning pitch is expected at Newlands.

"It's too much of a risk, as then your batting tail will be too long.

"I'd rather give someone like Vernon Philander a chance as the third seam bowler, because his performances at first class level this past year were fantastic and he's a more than useful batsman," said Adams.

Highveld Lions and Proteas opening batsman, Alvirio Petersen, also feels Tahir could provide the necessary spark the Proteas need.

"If they (the selectors) want a defensive spinner who can stop the flow of runs, then Paul (Harris) is first choice, but if you need someone that can bowl teams out, there's no doubt (that Tahir should be included)," said Petersen.

The Proteas missed an attacking spinner in recent years at Newlands. A couple of seasons ago they struggled to bowl out England in the final innings and the same scenario played itself out earlier this year against India. Harris was the spinner on both those occasions and he failed to provide the necessary spark to ignite a victory.

As an old spinner myself, I agree totally with Gogga. A spinner is expected to concede more runs, and not be a prolific wicket taker, but he gets the big wickets. Tahir is new and exciting, with the potential to be our own Warne, which we hadn't since, well, Gogga!

So who do we believe, Gogga or Boeta? The latter is a current player and has played against both Tahir and Harris in four-day games this season -- he strongly recommends Harris. I just get the feeling that that Gogga's advice is partisan and based on emotion. Don't get me wrong, if Tahir's form is such that he can even be half as good as a Warne, then pick him. But I'll trust Gazza & Co to make that call.

To beat spin bowling you need to have both quick, fast feet and not play with a stiff wrist and legs.Michael Clarke,Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting are all very good at both these techniques and they know how to dominate spin bowling on turning pitches as was seen recently when they played and beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka,so the selecters should really get this one right the first time. It's also vey important to see which of Tahir or Harris is the fittest and which of the two can bowl say 25 to 35 overs in a day concentrating and still take wickets and slowing the Australian scoring rate down.

Thank you marco: a voice of reason.

Paul Harris couldn't turn a key. It's absolutely pathetic that we should go into a match with a defensive spinner just because he can "hold an end". Paul Harris's variety is the one that occassionally turns and surprises both him and the batsman. Tahir is the attacking spinner we've been yearning for all these year. Symcox, Boje and Harris are just about the worst spinners to have played the game and we simply can't afford continuing along that path. If we want to hold an end then JP Duminy is fully capable of this, while also adding is value with the bat. I'd even play Johan Botha before useless Harris. So many times we've struggled to bowl out teams in the 4th innings on crumbling 4th/5th day pitches simply because we had a toothless "spinner"

Paul Harris kan nie n tennisbal in die teerpad spin nie!!!!

This is stupid!!!! We all know Tahir must play. If we need a second spinner pick Botha or Peterson. Attacking spinners, can bat, can field. Harris can't turn a chop, can't, bat and can't field.

You need to take 20 wickets to win a test match. Tahir should play.
