Potchefstroom - Twenty-one-year-old Marchant de Lange took a remarkable 5/56 to lead an impressive bowling comeback by South Africa "A" on Day 2 of their four-day tour match against Australia at Senwes Park.
Full scorecard
The South Africans finished with 204/6 at stumps - a lead of 151 runs with four second innings wickets in hand.
Playing in only his 14th first-class game, De Lange produced a fine spell of bowling for SA "A", which left the Australian batting line-up in tatters, and the rest of the country in wonder of the unknown speedster from Tzaneen.
Shaun Marsh (57) and Michael Clarke (76) resumed the innings on 115/3 and partnered in a solid 131-run fourth-wicket partnership before the departure of Marsh, who was the first of De Lange’s victims.
Brad Haddin (0), Mitchell Johnson (0), Peter Siddle (2) and Trent Copeland (2) were the other batsmen to fall to the youngster, who’s morning spell returned figures of 5/24, a statistic any fast bowler would be proud of. Michael Hussey’s form on tour continued with an unbeaten 41 which ensured that the visitors secured a 53-run first innings lead.
In response, Alviro Petersen followed up his first innings duck with his 23rd first-class century, a crucial Captain’s innings, after the home team looked in trouble at 97/4.
Petersen and JP Duminy (32) put on 97-runs for the third wicket but it was the century partnership between Petersen and Thami Tsolekile (58) that put the side in a commanding position.
Copeland and Siddle struck with one wicket a piece in the final two overs of the day to remove Petersen and Tsolekile, which leaves Day 3 interestingly poised.
It will be up to the new pair of Ryan McLaren and Robin Peterson to bat South Africa to a total that can push the match to an interesting climax.
