Marco Jansen was sublime with the ball as the Sunrisers Eastern Cape successfully defended the SA20 title against Durban's Super Giants at a sold-out Newlands on Saturday evening.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape were excellent in all facets of the game as they sealed a 89-run victory in Cape Town to win their second successive SA20 title.

Chasing 205 to win, the Durban's Super Giants were nowhere near chasing the competitive target as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Jansen surged to the top of the SA20 wicket-taking list as he ended on five for 30 in his four overs.

Jansen was supported by Ottniel Baartman and Daniel Worrall, who took two wickets apiece as Durban's Super Giants were bundled out for a mere 115.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder top-scored with 38, while Dwaine Pretorius contributed 28 to a disjointed Durban batting line-up. The dangerous Heinrich Klaasen fell for a golden duck when he was trapped LBW by Baartman.

Earlier on, after opting to bat first, the Sunrisers got off to a shaky start with the early loss of Dawid Malan, who was trapped LBW for six by Reece Topley.

A 90-run partnership between Jordan Hermann and Tom Abell formed that took the game away from Durban before skipper Keshav Maharaj (2/33) struck twice. Maharaj took two wickets in the 11th over, including opener Hermann, who was caught in the deep for 42.

Abell brought up his third SA20 half-century, scoring 55 off 34 balls before he was one of Maharaj's victims.

However, an unbeaten 98-run stand between skipper Aiden Markram (42*) and Tristan Stubbs slaughtered the Durban bowling attack. Stubbs was undefeated on 56 off 30 balls (hitting four fours and three sixes).

Scores in brief:

Sunrisers Eastern Cape 204-3 in 20 overs (Stubbs 56*, Abell 55, Maharaj 2/33, Topley 1/32)

Durban's Super Giants 115 all out in 17 overs (Mulder 38, Pretorius 28, Jansen 5/30, Worrall 2/15)

INNINGS

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape posted a competitive 204-3 in the SA20 final against Durban's Super Giants at Newlands on Saturday.

After opting to bat first, the Sunrisers got off to a shaky start with the early loss of Dawid Malan, who was trapped LBW for six by Reece Topley.

10 February 15:25

Durban's Super Giants confirmed their status as the second-best team in the 2023/24 SA20 with a comfortable 69-run over the Joburg Super Kings in the second qualifier at the Wanderers on Thursday night.

The 211/6 DSG compiled on the back of a ballistic 101-run partnership that came off just 38 balls between Heinrich Klaasen (74) and Wiaan Mulder (50*) proved to be too much for JSK, who sank to 142 all out in 17.4 overs.

Junior Dala was the chief wrecker with 4/38, with able support from Dwaine Pretorius (2/17), Naveen-ul-Haq (2/27) and Wiaan Mulder (1/16).

Once they slipped to 32/3 inside the first six overs when they lost Faf du Plessis (3), Leus du Plooy (10), and Sibonelo Makhanya (11) cheaply, the Super Kings were never in the hunt.

A 28-minute delay for a failed floodlight pylon also robbed them of whatever momentum they had as JSK came a distant second best in a testy and feisty fixture.

There were plenty of verbals throughout the game as Nandre Burger tussled with Klaasen, from where JSK were not only out-talked, they were thoroughly outplayed.

DSG deserves to make the finals, having finished second in the regular season before losing Tuesday's first qualifier in Cape Town to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

JSK was heavily reliant on a good start from their openers Du Plessis and Du Plooy and when the former sent a ball into orbit that was well caught by Quinton de Kock off Naveen, JSK were already in trouble at 5/1 after 1.3 overs.

It didn't get any easier when they slipped to 13/2 in the third over when Du Plooy was spectacularly caught by Naveen at wide extra cover off Reece Topley.

Further verbals followed between Du Plooy and Topley as JSK felt the pressure, with the latter virtue being further ratcheted up when Makhanya feathered a Mulder edge to De Kock.

When the game resumed after the floodlight failure, Moeen Ali and Reeza Hendricks put together an energetic, if not futile stand of 54 off 36 balls for the fourth wicket.

It was snuffed out, along with any hope JSK had of winning when Ali chopped on a Dwaine Pretorius delivery.

Hendricks followed him 22 runs later when he skied a Pretorius slower ball to Klaasen at fine-leg.

It left JSK at 108/5, which was down and out, even though Donovan Ferreira also provided some fireworks.

He flat-batted three fours and a six in his 12-ball 24 before he smacked a Naveen full toss to Klaasen at wide long-off.

At the start of the 16th over, Junior Dala added the coup de grace when he dismissed Dayyaan Galiem (1) and Sam Cook (0) in consecutive balls. He didn't get the hat-trick, but the game was properly over as a contest despite Doug Bracewell's lusty hitting.

Bracewell (23) was Dala's third wicket when he holed out to Klaasen at square-leg, from where Dala castled Burger to end the contest and book their flights to Cape Town.

Scores in brief:

Durban's Super Giants: 211/6 (Heinrich Klaasen 74, Wiaan Mulder 50*, Bhanuka Rajapaksa 35, Nandre Burger 2/27, Doug Bracewell 2/33, Dayyaan Galiem 1/38)

Joburg Super Kings: 142 (Moeen Ali 30, Reeza Hendricks 27, Donovan Ferreira 24, Bracewell 23, Junior Dala 4/38, Dwaine Pretorius 2/17, Naveen-ul-Haq 2/27, Mulder 1/16)

Durban's Super Giants won by 69 runs.

INNINGS REPORT | Klaasen, Mulder wreak batting havoc as JSK face tall 212 chase

Heinrich Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder powered Durban's Super Giants to a very defendable 211/6 in the second SA20 qualifier against the Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Thursday.

On a greenish, but fair and firm surface they were given first use of, DSG, the hosts by being higher on the log, trusted their attacking instincts despite the loss of early wickets.

They're a team that bats deep, so they haven't been too worried by the loss of early wickets and this was shown by Klaasen (74) and Mulder (50*), who helped add 102 runs in the last six overs.

It also helps to have a cold and calculating hitter like Klaasen, who after getting to seven off six balls, absolutely took the attack to JSK, tonking whoever bowled at him.

Imran Tahir felt Klaasen's wrath the most in the 15th over, with 29 being taken off his leg-spinners.Mulder hit a six and took a single off the first two balls before Klaasen drilled three sixes and a four.

That particular launch took DSG from 109/4 in the 14th over to 138/4 in the 15th over, from where the Durban side didn't look back.

Klaasen and Mulder then took another 29-run over in the 18th off Sam Cook, something that allowed them to reach 192/4 in the 18th over.

Klaasen eventually fell off the third ball of the 19th over when he picked out Doug Bracewell at deep long-off, with Burger winning the mini-battle.

The batting war was won by Klaasen, who shared a 101-run fifth-wicket stand with Mulder that came off only 38 balls.

The high-octane finish was in start contrast to the controlled start when Matthew Breetzke (12) and Quinton de Kock (23) fell with the score on 37 in the fourth and fifth overs respectively.

Breetzke was trapped in front by Cook while De Kock was bowled by Breetzke. Dayyaan Galiem collected JJ Smut (11) to leave DSG at 52/3 in the seventh over.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa slammed a 23-ball 35 in a 43-run partnership with Klaasen that spanned 31 delivers while Mulder made sure with his 50 that the runs weren't wasted.

After that, the mess began and JSK has quite the chase on their hands.

Scores in brief:

Durban's Super Giants: 211/6 (Heinrich Klaasen 74, Wiaan Mulder 50*, Bhanuka Rajapaksa 35, Nandre Burger 2/27, Doug Bracewell 2/33, Dayyaan Galiem 1/38)
