Whatever your thoughts on the appointment of Shukri Conrad to the Proteas’ Test head-coaching post, take a moment to appreciate that he’s accepted a tough gig many must have spiritedly sidestepped.

On several grounds - and beyond just the widely-known unique demands of the task in a South African climate - it is difficult to think of a less favourable time for someone to take the reins in that format in the entire post-isolation era.

One of the few things going for him is that the red- and white-ball roles have been separated for the first time, as Rob Walter was similarly confirmed by Cricket South Africa earlier this week as the limited-overs appointee: Conrad has a dedicated focus on the multi-day game.
