Cape Town - Maritzburg United were hoping to have reached an agreement with former coach Steve Komphela and his agent Tim Sukazi by Friday following a contractual dispute that arose after Komphela triggered a buyout clause in his contract to join PSL champions Kaizer Chiefs.
Maritzburg chairman Farouk Kadodia on Monday confirmed that the club had not received anything in the way of financial compensation since Komphela’s move, and that they would be taking the steps to bring Steve back to Maritzburg to serve out his notice period until the end of July.
But, Maritzburg CEO Younus Kadodia confirmed to Sport24 on Friday that he was hopeful that an agreement would be reached between the two parties after there had been a disagreement over the compensation figure relating directly to Komphela’s notice period.
"On Thursday afternoon a final proposal was sent from us to them and now we’re just waiting for Tim to respond and agree to settle before the end of business today," Kadodia said on Friday.
"The buyout clause is being interpreted differently by different lawyers. Lawyer ‘x’ and lawyer ‘y’ will interpret the same clause however they want to.
"The one month’s written notice basically means from July 1 to the end of July, and they’re trying to obviously wiggle out of that."
Kadodia added that he was not impressed with the way that Chiefs had conducted themselves in their move for Komphela.
"The disappointing thing for us as a club was the fact that Steve resigned on Friday the 12th an right up until that Wednesday – the 10th or 11th of June – Bobby had denied speaking to Steve," said Kadodia.
"Even Steve himself gave the chairman a verbal confirmation that he would be back on Monday, and this was literally on the Wednesday or Thursday before he resigned. So I think that has left a bit of a bitter taste amongst the people here at the club."
