Bok Deysel back in action

Durban - Springbok flank Jean Deysel will get his first run following extensive rehabilitation in Vodacom Cup action this weekend.

The Sharks XV travel to Bloemfontein to take on Free State XV in a third round Vodacom Cup match on Friday evening, with Deysel named as captain.

According to Sharks website editor, Michael Marnewick, Deysel was expected to play last week but his first start was postponed until this week.

Deysel has played no rugby since the Currie Cup final last year, where he again aggravated a troublesome knee ligament problem that required off-season surgery to repair.

With Paul Jordaan and Marius Joubert away with the Sharks' Super Rugby squad, Wandile Mjekevu has been shifted to centre alongside Heimar Williams, while Mjekevu’s place on the wing has been filled by Rosko Specman.

Amongst the forwards, Chris Cloete and Deysel come into the side as the two flanks, Brynard Stander shifting to the bench while Francois Kleinhans is out suspended.

The final changes are in the front row where Kyle Cooper gets a run at hooker and the call-up for Nick Schonert to the Sharks' touring team means a start at tighthead prop for Allan Dell.

Both sides come into this match with a win and a loss to their respective records. The Sharks XV defeated Border 42-0 in their first match and were disappointingly edged out by Western Province by just two points (15-17) last Saturday.

Reflecting on their match against WP, coach Sean Everitt says, “We were very disappointed to lose, I felt we had enough opportunities to score tries, but we didn’t make the most of them. To lose by two points in a tight game was disappointing, especially as we had create a number of opportunities.”

The Free State team beat SWD in their first match, but an 80th minute penalty saw the men from Bloemfontein lose to Boland by two points last week.

“Free State are always a dangerous team to play, you can’t underestimate them, they have lots of experience in their side,” explains Everitt.

“We're looking forward to the game. We have a young team but the guys are always excited about playing.”
