Alexander challenged for SA Rugby hot seat

Cape Town - Mark Alexander is set to stand for another term as president of SA Rugby after nominations for official positions were confirmed on Wednesday.

However, in a press release sent by SA Rugby, the organisation confirmed that Alexander will be opposed by Andre May from the Leopards.

Alexander has stood as president of the union since 2016 after succeeding Oregan Hoskins.

He previously served as deputy president from 2007.

One of Alexander's main priorities when taking over as SA Rugby president was securing the 2023 Rugby World Cup for South Africa.

However, South Africans were left stunned in November last year when France won the right to stage the prestigious event despite the World Rugby council recommending that South Africa host it.

The general council meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 6, 2018.

Nominations received by Tuesday's deadline for positions to be elected at a General Council meeting of the South African Rugby Union are as follows (in alphabetical order):

President:

Mark Alexander (incumbent President)

Andre May (Leopards)

Deputy President:

Francois Davids (incumbent Deputy President)

Jan Marais (Griffons)

Executive Council:

Vivian Lottering (incumbent - Valke)

Schalk Liebenberg (KZN)

Hein Mentz (Pumas)

Lindsay Mould (Free State)

Arthob Petersen (Boland)

JJ van der Mescht (Blue Bulls)

Thelo Wakefield (WP)
