Symcox laments ‘useless’ state of SA cricket

Cape Town - Former Proteas spinner Pat Symcox is frustrated at the current state of affairs in South African cricket.

South African cricket appears in turmoil, with the national team struggling against England and the Under-19s recording a series of embarrassing defeats at the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh.

The Proteas went down 3-0 in a Test series in India late last year and recently lost a home Test series 2-1 to England. The South Africans are currently also 2-0 down to England in the five-match ODI series heading into Tuesday’s third match in Centurion.

In the Under-19 World Cup tournament, the SA Under-19s lost to Bangladesh, Namibia and suffered further embarrassment when Zimbabwe thumped them by eight wickets on Monday.

The quality of cricket on display in the six-team franchise system also leaves much to be desired, but despite this, Cricket South Africa (CSA) is considering the addition of two more franchises from next season.

Symcox, who played 20 Tests and 80 ODIs for South Africa, is worried about the state of cricket affairs in the country and shared his views via his official Facebook page on Monday:

“Okay..so our U19 team have now also managed to lose to Zim...that is of course after losing to Namibia and oh yes...Bangladesh before that...BUT ALL IS GOOD WITH CRICKET WE WILL HEAR...add a few more Franchises next year and lets see some more USELESSNESS...”
