Johannesburg - A man had to carry his elderly relative's body down four flights of stairs in an Mpumalanga hospital because the lifts were broken, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

"There was no one to remove his body and the lifts did not work. Even the matron could not make a plan. The undertaker was waiting for us downstairs so I carried his body down by myself," Glen Laubscher told the Afrikaans daily.

Joe Jacobson, 86, died in Rob Ferreria hospital on Saturday around 09:30 after a stroke.

Health department spokesperson Dumisane Malamule told Beeld it would investigate the matter.
