Johannesburg - SA tennis player Kevin Anderson continues to fly the country’s flag high at this year’s Wimbledon tournament in London.
The Johannesburg-born ace cruised past Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans in straight sets – 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 – in the third-round match.
Anderson, who reached the semifinals in Estoril and quarterfinals in Geneva, will now meet American Sam Querrey in the last 16 on Monday.
Men's doubles
Querrey advanced to this round after he won the replayed match against 10th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Saturday.
The duo had slugged it out for two hours and 54 minutes, before fading light caused their third-round match to be suspended on Friday.
There was almost nothing to separate the two, with Tsonga serving at 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-5 at the resumption of play.
They played just eight points in less than five minutes, as Querrey immediately broke Tsonga to win the decisive fifth set 7-5 to advance.
Meanwhile, after a three-hour and 30-minute battle, another South African, doubles specialist Raven Klaasen, and his American partner Rajeev Ram moved into round three of Wimbledon men’s doubles.
The seventh seeds beat India’s Purav Raja and Divij Sharan 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(6), 10-8.
Klaasen and Ram will now meet unseeded Hans Podlipnik-Castillo of Chile and Andrei Vasilevski of Belarus in the third round.
Apart from Stan Wawrinka, who was knocked out in the opening round, the other prime contenders remain on track to clinch the prestigious trophy.
Defending champion Andy Murray and two-time winner Rafael Nadal booked their places in the fourth round on Friday.
Top seed
In the women’s section, Romanian Simona Halep will face Belarusian Victória Azárenka on Monday after breezing past China’s Peng Shuai 6-4, 7-6 in the third round.
Garbiñe Muguruza is also through to the second week of the tournament after trashing Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea 6-2, 6-2.
The 2015 runner-up will face top seed Angelique Kerber, who defeated American Shelby Rogers 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 on Saturday.
British number one and tournament favourite Johanna Konta will on Monday play Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia for a place in the quarterfinals.
