Venus waltzes into next round

London - Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams eased into the second round at the All England Club with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Paraguay's Rossana De Los Rios on Monday.

Williams dominated Wimbledon for much of the last decade, reaching eight of the last 10 finals, and the second seed looks in the mood for another long run in the tournament after crushing De Los Rios.

She has the extra motivation of wanting to avenge her defeat to sister Serena in last year's final and there was never any chance of an upset late in the day on Court One.

"It's good to be back. I love playing on the grass," Venus said. "It was pretty straightforward out there but it's just the first round and I'll try to play better with each match."

The 30-year-old hasn't been in the best of form on the WTA Tour of late, but she is always a far more formidable force in the grand slams - and never more so than when she can feel the grass of the All England Club under her feet.

Venus took a few games to find her rhythm but once she did De Los Rios posed only the weakest of challenges to her progress.

With the first set in the bag, Venus began to unload a barrage of vicious winners from the back of the court.

While her reliance on a power-game will never please the purists there are few women who can live with such a brutal assault, especially on the quicker grass courts.

A pair of breaks in the second set put the result beyond doubt and Venus briefly relaxed enough for De Los Rios to win a couple of games before the American sealed a routine victory.
