London - Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal hailed Rory McIlroy as "amazing" on Monday after the Northern Irishman's sensational eight-shot victory at the US Open.
Now the world No 1, who sent McIlroy a text message to congratulate him on his win, will be waiting to congratulate the champion in person when McIlroy is invited to the Royal Box at Wimbledon next Monday.
"He did amazing. He played solid, doing what he had to do all the time with no mistakes. I have only seen that mental strength once before and that was Tiger Woods," said Nadal, himself an accomplished golfer.
"It was the perfect round of golf. He managed the moments perfectly and after the first nine holes he played solid with no mistakes.
"Hopefully I will have the chance to congratulate him in person next week."
