Sevastova reaches US Open quarter-finals

New York - Anastasija Sevastova became the first Latvian woman to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final in 22 years when she defeated Britain's Johanna Konta at the US Open on Sunday.

Sevastova, the world number 48, had knocked out French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the second round and she built on that victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win over 13th seed Konta.

Larisa Savchenko was the last Latvian woman to make the quarter-finals of a Slam at Wimbledon in 1994.

Sevastova, who quit the sport for the best part of two years between 2013 and 2015, will play either Madison Keys of the United States or two-time runner-up Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the semi-finals.
