'Patient' Nishikori ready for US Open

Cape Town - Kei Nishikori feels he is a more patient player as he prepares for the US Open next week.

The Japanese superstar believes nine years on the ATP Tour has made him more patient, particular in comparison to two years ago where he made the final.

"I think I'm little more patient and playing much better than last year, two years ago,” the 26-year-old told reporters at Flushing Meadows.

"You know, I'm really excited for next week. I feel a lot of special feeling here in the US Open, a good memory from two years ago."

In 2014, Nishikori enjoyed a thrilling run, ousting Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka in five set marathons before edging top seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

This year, Nishikori could play Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter-finals.

The Argentine - who gained a wild card entry to the event - has enjoyed a fantastic comeback from his wrist injury, reaching the final at the Rio Olympic Games.

"I think he's the most dangerous unseeded player," added Nishikori.

“He has great chance to win a grand slam."

Nishikori enjoyed a great tournament in Rio as well, failing in the semi-finals, but defeating Rafael Nadal to claim the bronze medal.

"I had a great experience," he continued.

"Olympic games, it's something special, and especially the last match against Rafa I played good tennis. He almost came back, but played a great match. I had a lot of confidence from that match."

Nishikori's first opponent in New York is the unseeded Benjamin Becker of Germany.
