Kyrgios: I'll quit if I win US Open

Cape Town - Tennis star Nick Kyrgios isn’t new to making controversial statements, and this time he went as far as putting an expiration date on his professional career.

The Australian had a quick question and answer session with his Twitter followers on Monday, as the US Open officially opened.

The 21-year-old was asked by a fan whether he was going to quit before 27. Kyrgios didn’t hold back and replied saying: “Probably before that”.

After that revelation another fan gave an alternative scenario for the Aussie asking, “What if you became number one and were playing at your best at 27. Would you still quit?

Kyrgios stated that if he won the current US Open tournament, he would never play again.

Some fans were outraged over his comments with one follower saying, “Been supporting this guy for a while frustrates me when I see him saying stuff like this” and another saying, “What!? So 1 major is your goal? Come on man. You gotta aim a little higher than that.

The No 14 seed also revealed - other than his love for his tennis playing girlfriend Ajla Tomljanovic - that players were reportedly allowed to smoke marijuana during a professional tour.

During Wimbledon this year, the Aussie was fined and warned for his unsportsmanlike behaviour and then went on to denounce his love for the game.

Kygrios starts his US Open campaign on Tuesday when he faces Aljaz Bedene of Great Britain in the first round at 17:00 SA time.
