New York - Mardy Fish gave American fans something to cheer about early on Thursday as he reached the third round of the US Open with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.
Fish's win came a day after close friend Andy Roddick, the top-seeded American at Flushing Meadows, bowed out of the tournament in acrimonious circumstances.
But number 19 seed Fish, the third-ranked American behind Roddick and John Isner, avoided a similar repeat to the delight of the partisan crowd.
Fish had endured a five-set scare against Jan Hajek in the previous round but made light work of an opponent who managed back-to-back match wins at just four tournaments this year.
The 28-year-old wrapped up the match when a Cuevas forehand clipped the net and landed out
"I've never played him before and I didn't know what to expect," said Fish in a post-match interview on court. "He played really, really well but I was looking to break him straight away and switch the momentum, which worked."
He now faces either France's Arnaud Clement or Argentina's Eduardo Schwank in the third round.
