Soderling withdraws from Open

New York - Swedish sixth seed Robin Soderling withdrew with illness on Wednesday before his opening match, to be replaced in the US Open draw by Rogerio Dutra da Silva of Brazil.

The lucky loser from qualifying will play in the first round against Louk Sorensen of Ireland.

Soderling has been injury-plagued all summer and came to New York without the benefit of a hardcourt tune-up match. He last competed more than a month ago when he won the Bastad ATP event on clay at home.

The two-time Roland Garros finalist has never been past the quarter-finals in New York.
