Johannesburg - Chanelle Scheepers, the only South African in the women's singles draw, was knocked out in the first round of the US Open grand slam tennis tournament on Tuesday night.
Scheepers, the SA women's number one, went down 2-6, 1-6 against Russian 14th seed Maria Kirilenko at Flushing Meadows in New York.
Kevin Anderon, the only SA player in the men's singles draw, was set to face Spaniard David Ferrer, the fourth seed, in the first round on Wednesday evening.
