Johannesburg - Defending champion Chanelle Scheepers cruised into the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou International Women's Open tennis tournament in China on Wednesday.

Scheepers, who won her maiden WTA title at the tournament last year, defeated Serbian Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

The South African women's number one, seeded fifth, will face either Polish fourth seed Urszula Radwanska or Mandy Minella of Luxembourg in the quarter-finals.

Last season, Scheepers became the first South African woman in eight years to win a WTA title when she beat Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova in straight sets in the Guangzhou final.
