Scheepers downs Keothavong

Johannesburg - South African No 1 Chanelle Scheepers reached the second round of the US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in New York late on Tuesday.

Scheepers defeated Anne Keothavong of Great Britain in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the women's singles competition.

The South African faces 21-year-old German Mona Barthel in the second round.

SA men's No 1 Kevin Anderson will square up against Frenchman Michael Llodra in the second round of the men's singles.

Anderson defeated Go Soeda of Japan in the opening round earlier in the week.
