SA duo climb in rankings

Johannesburg - Kevin Anderson and Chanelle Scheepers, South Africa's top-ranked players, both climbed the world tennis rankings on Monday.

Anderson rose four positions to 30th after he reached the third round of the French Open in Paris. He edged past Rui Machado of Portugal in a five-set thriller in the first round before he ousted Argentine Horacio Zeballos.

The South African put up a strong fight against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the third round, taking him to five sets, but was ultimately eliminated by the world No 7.

Scheepers, meanwhile, rose two places to 43rd in the women's world rankings after she reached the second round at Roland Garros.

She defeated Spaniard Laura Pous-Tio 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the first round, before she was eliminated by Russian Nadia Petrova, the former world No 3, in straight sets.
