Monfils pulls out of San Jose

California - Top seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils has pulled out of the ATP Tour's San Jose Open with a right knee injury, organisers said on Wednesday.

Monfils, who is ranked 13th in the world, withdrew on Wednesday after playing in a doubles match on Tuesday. He was schedule to play in his first singles match on Thursday.

Monfils started to feel pain in his knee during his last tournament where he reached the final in Montpellier. He said the pain returned this week in San Jose where he also played in an exhibition match on Monday.

Monfils is expected to return to France to get a magnetic resonance imaging scan on the knee. Monfils will also miss next week's Regions Morgan Keegan Championship in Memphis, Tennessee.

He will be replaced in the San Jose singles draw by lucky loser Blake Strode of the USA.
