Mahut downs Mayer

Montpellier - Frenchman Nicolas Mahut beat sixth-seeded Florian Mayer 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the Open Sud de France.

Mahut jumped to a 4-1 lead in the tie-breaker and took the first set when Mayer double-faulted. He then broke the German twice in the final set to clinch victory.

He will next play the winner between top-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic and French qualifier Florent Serra.
