Li Na eases past Safarova

Mason - French Open champion Li Na beat Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday to become the first woman to reach the third round of the Western & Southern Open, a US Open tune-up.

In the first round, unseeded Flavia Pennetta upset 12th-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Russia's Nadia Petrova edged Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.

In men's first-round action, unseeded Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan upset 16th-seeded Stanlisas Wawrinka of Switzerland 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Ninth-seeded Nicolas Almagro advanced with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes.

Croatia's Ivo Karlovic rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Germany's Florian Mayer, while Russian Nikolay Davydenko beat Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Twentieth-ranked Serbian Janko Tipsarevic avoided an upset, beating Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
