Scheepers advances in Paris

Paris - South African No 1 Chanelle Scheepers reached the second round of the French Open with a victory over Viktoriya Kutuzova of the Ukraine at Roland Garros on Monday.

Scheepers, the only South African woman taking part in the second Grand Slam of the season, defeated Kutuzova 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in their first-round clash.

Earlier in the day it was revealed that Scheepers, 27, had climbed two places to a career-high 65th in the WTA world rankings.

South African men's No 1 Kevin Naderson, seeded No 32 in the singles draw, is set to face unseeded Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in his first-round match on Tuesday.
