Anderson progresses in Paris

Johannesburg - Kevin Anderson got South Africa's French Open campaign off to a winning start on Sunday, coasting into the second round of the Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros.

Anderson, the number 23 seed, beat Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine, who reached the main draw as a lucky loser, in straight sets, securing a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 victory in the first round of the men's singles competition.

The SA men's No 1 will face either Russian Evgeny Donskoy or German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round.

Chanelle Scheepers, the only South African in the women's singles draw, squares up against Mathilde Johansson of France in the opening round on Monday.
