Ferrer survives scare

Shanghai - Spain's David Ferrer survived a scare to advance to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, fighting off three match points to beat countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday.

The third-seeded Ferrer hit two booming serves and a forehand winner down the line to save the three match points on his serve in the second set.

He then broke former No 1 Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, twice in the final set Hernandez signs five-year deal to close out the victory.

Andy Roddick had a far easier time advancing to the quarterfinals, hitting 11 aces and 23 winners to beat Spain's Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-4.
