Ferrer on top in Spain

Valencia - Saniard David Ferrer came through a tough battle with his compatriot Marcel Granollers to win the Valencia Open 7-5, 6-3 here on Sunday, leaving him on the verge of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals.

Ferrer had won their only previous meeting in Barcelona earlier this year and again had the edge to bring to an end a dream week for Granollers who had only made the tournament as a lucky loser.

The victory gave 28-year-old Ferrer 200 more points he needed to reach the World Tour Finals in London.

Ranked eighth in the world, Ferrer has had a less than spectacular season, where the highlights were reaching the finals in Rome, Buenos Aires and Acapulco - where he won - and his chances of playing in London appeared slim.

Granollers started the stronger forcing his first break points on Ferrer's second service game but was unable to capitalise.

The Barcelona born player was looking to attack at the net where he has shown good reactions throughout the tournament.

It was Ferrer raising his game who managed the first break to go 5-3 up but Granollers responded to level the match at 5-5.

There was little to pick between the two but Ferrer came through 7-5 winning a disputed call on his advantage at deuce.

In the second set Granollers' confidence dropped as Ferrer took control with excellent ground strokes and he stormed into a 3-0 lead. Granollers managed to hold on to win his next service games but went down 6-3.
