Durban to host ITF events

Durban - The South African Tennis Association (SATA) announced that Kwa-Zulu Natal will play host to two forthcoming international tennis events.

A men's and women's ITF Futures event will be played simultaneously at Westridge Park Tennis Stadium in Durban on 16-22 May, and 23-29 May.

South African hopefuls Ruan Roelofse (Western Province) and Nikala Scholtz (Boland) have both confirmed their entries into the tournament and will be looking at replicating the recent success of South Africa's top two ranked players Kevin Anderson and Izak van der Merwe who both were winners at the SA Open and Soweto Open respectively.

Roelofse, who will be seeded sixth in the first event said that he always looks forward to playing at home in front of his home crowd.

"For the past two weeks I have been working closely with my coach Pietie Norval, fitness trainer Jaco Burger and I am striking the ball well and feeling good going into the Durban tournaments," said Roelofse.

SATA have awarded wildcards to Andre van der Burgh (Boland), Adriaan du Toit (Boland), Musowenkosi Mpondi (Kwa-Zulu Natal) and Jarryd Botha (Western Province). Mpondi is one of the country's top junior players and is the current under 14 National title holder.

In the Women's draw, Surina de Beer (Gauteng North) - who reached a career high ranking of 130 in August of 1998 - will lead the South African contingent along with Natasha Fourouclas (Mpumalanga) and Madrie le Roux (Gauteng North), who have recently returned from Egypt as part of the South African Fed Cup team where South Africa were promoted to Group II.

Wildcards have been awarded to Emmerentia Marx (South West Districts), Zanmarie Pienaar (Gauteng East), Elaine van Zyl (Boland) and Jeanna Schmidt (Gauteng North).

SATA also announced that they would  be hosting an ITF Level 2 Officiating course leading up to the events in Durban. 25 candidates from across Africa have been nominated by their national associations and selected by the ITF.

The course will be taught by Wimbledon referee and ITF Chief of Officiating, Andrew Jarrett and ITF Regional Officiating Officer and international referee Ian Smith.
