Clijsters plays despite crash

Doha - US Open champion Kim Clijsters' chances of winning the WTA Championships took a hit when she was involved in a "scary" road accident on the way to the venue on Saturday.

Clijsters was due to play a semi-final against Australia's Samantha Stosur, but her courtesy car was struck so heavily that it was abandoned by the side of the highway.

The Belgian star and her manager Bob Verbeeck were en route from Clijsters' hotel to the Khalifa stadium and were approaching a roundabout where another vehicle appeared to have smacked into a passenger's door.

"It was just a minor accident, and Kim is okay, and so she will be able to play no problem," said a WTA spokesperson.

However there was apparently a 30-minute delay before Clijsters was able to continue her journey after another vehicle was called. And she had a rather different version of what had happened.

"We just had a car accident on our way to the courts! So scary......Bob, my manager took the hit," Clijsters said on Twitter.

"We are all okay ....Just the car is ready for the junk yard," she concluded.

Certainly Clijsters recovered from her scare well enough to appear on centre court more or less on time, with the match starting only ten minutes late.
