Kuala Lumpur - Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus overcame sixth-seeded American Alex Bogomolov Jr 7-6 (3), 6-4 Monday in the first round of the Malaysian Open.
The 60th-ranked Baghdatis earned the only break of the match in the second set, clinching the win after 1 hour, 45 minutes against the Russian-born Bogomolov Jr at Kuala Lumpur's Putra Stadium.
Also, No 7 Dmitry Tursunov of Russia needed 2 hours, 14 minutes to beat Paul Capdeville of Chile 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, in a match that stretched past midnight Malaysian time. The 41st-ranked Tursunov improved to 4-0 against Capdeville, although it was the first time they played since Indianapolis in 2008.
In the other first-round match, David Goffin of Belgium beat Matthew Ebden of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (4).
