Mentally strong Muguruza progresses

Melbourne - No 7 seed, Garbine Muguruza, was tested both physically and mentally during her first round win against Kiwi Marina Erakovic at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday.

Muguruza called upon her mental toughness reserves to overcome a lingering upper right leg injury as well as some pre-game nerves, before prevailing 7-5, 6-4.

"Obviously the first matches are tough, because you're nervous, you have to fight against the doubt of how it's gonna be," she said in her post-match press conference.

As far as her injury goes, Muguruza felt physical pain but was also worried about it from a psychological perspective.

"It was also mental, because I was nervous too."

There was a continued mental theme being expressed by the Spaniard during her interview.

"I think this match was definitely like more mental in certain situations..."

Muguruza will undoubtedly be tested both physically and mentally during the remainder of the week.

However, it looks like her mental reserves will be called upon just as much, if not more, than the physical side.
