Scheepers beaten in Round 1

Johannesburg - Chanelle Scheepers put up a fight, taking former world No 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia to three sets, but was ultimately eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Scheepers struck back in the second set to keep herself in the match, but was dominated in the third as Kuznetsova secured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory to progress.

With Rik de Voest having bombed out in the first round on Monday, SA men's number one Kevin Anderson was the only SA player left in the singles competition.

Anderson, the number 30 seed, faces Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine in the second round on Wednesday.
