Melbourne - Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open with a tougher-than-expected win over Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium.
Jankovic, bidding for her first Grand Slam singles title, beat Flipkens 6-4 7-5 on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old Serbian player lost last year's US Open title to Serena Williams and also made the semi-finals in last year's Australian Open and French Open and the fourth round at Wimbledon.
She'll play 26th-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan, who beat Nathalie Dechy of France 1-6 6-1 6-3 in the second round.
