Djokovic: no fights please

Melbourne - Serbia's Novak Djokovic has urged fans not to repeat ugly scenes seen at recent Australian Opens, as he set up a potentially explosive second round match against Croatia's Ivan Dodig.

The third-seeded Djokovic eased through to the next round with a comfortable straight-sets win over Spaniard Marcel Granollers to line up the showdown, which will put organisers and police on alert.

Melbourne Park has repeatedly been the scene for skirmishes between chanting Serbian and Croatian fans letting off flares, and draped in the national flags of the countries which were at war in the 1990s.

Djokovic expressed hope there will be no repeat of the ethnic-related trouble, stressing that Serbian and Croatian players were all good friends.

"Well, I just hope that it's not going to happen," Djokovic said. "It's a very bad image that they send for their countries, you know.

"We don't support that at all. We are very good friends actually off the court, all of us Serbian and Croatian players. There's no reason to create any kind of bad feeling about our countries.

"We did have problems in the past, but that doesn't concern us.

Australia is home to large numbers of ethnic Serbs and Croats, including tennis player Jelena Dokic, whose families emigrated to escape ethnic conflict.

"We are athletes. We are friends off the court. You're never going to see a problem between us. Hopefully nothing will happen," Djokovic said.
