Anderson eases into quarters

Estoril - South African seventh seed Kevin Anderson reached the last eight with his defeat of Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-2 at the ATP-WTA Estoril Open here on Thursday.

Canadian Milos Raonic reached his first career quarter-final on clay with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Portugal's Joao Sousa at the ATP-WTA Estoril Open here on Thursday.

Raonic, seeded fifth and ranked 26th, kept his level high on the clay as he prepares to play as a seed at Roland Garros starting May 22.

The youngster who began the season just inside the Top 200 before breaking through with a title in San Jose and final a week later in Memphis, will Friday face the winner from French fourth seed Gilles Simon and Argentina Carlos Berloq.

In women's play, German Kristina Barrois upset top seed Alisa Kleybanova of Russia 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals.

The winner will next face Swede Johanna Larsson, who put out Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 7-5. Larsson is coached occasionally by former ATP player Joachim Johansson, who retired from the sport in March.

In the bottom of the draw, Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain accounted for Czech third seed Klara Zakopalova 6-3, 7-5 and awaits the winner from the last seeded player in the field, Australian Jarmila Gajdodova, or Romanian Monica Nicuescu.

Larsson, ranked 80th, has reached her second semi-final of the year, both on clay, after reaching the last four in Acapulco two months ago.

"In the beginning I was playing really short on the court, but Alla was making unforced errors," said the winner.

"In the second set she slowed a bit and I had to play more balls, it was a difficult win."
