Anderson, Scheepers advance

Cape Town - South Africa's No 1 tennis player, Kevin Anderson, has reached the second round of the French Open after winning a five-set marathon against Portugal's Rui Machado on Monday.

Anderson won 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (6/8), 4-6, 6-1, 11-9.

The game was delayed due to bad light on Sunday, with the players level at 7-all in the final set.

The 31st seeded Anderson hit 26 aces to his opponents three, which proved decisive in the end.

Anderson will next play Argentina's Horacio Zeballos, the world No 108, in the second round.

South Africa's top ranked woman, Chanelle Shceepers, also got her campaign off to a winning start on Monday, defeating Spain's Laura Pous-Tio 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

World No 45 Scheepers will next play Russai's Nadia Petrova, the 27th seed, in the second round.
