New coach lauds Anderson's professionalism

Cape Town - Kevin Anderson’s new coach, American Brad Stine, has lauded the South African’s professionalism.

Kline joined Anderson from the 2018 season after the South African parted ways with compatriot Neville Godwin at the end of last year.

Anderson, 31, made headlines in 2017 when he reached the US Open final, where he lost to world No 1 Rafael Nadal.

Anderson is currently ranked No 11 on the official ATP World Tour rankings and has set his sights high for the year ahead.

Stine, who has coached the likes of former World No 1 Jim Courier, Andrei Medvedev and Mardy Fish, heaped praise on Anderson in an interview with the ATP World Tour’s official website.

“Kevin is probably the most focused, intense, professional person I’ve been around since Jim Courier,” Stine said. “What he demands from himself and what he expects from his team when he’s at the office, inside the fences training for his tennis, is very high. I’ve really enjoyed that, actually. That intensity level and that demand, it’s great.”

This week, Anderson is the top seed at the New York Open in Long Island where he will face American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo in his first match on Thursday.

Anderson started the season with a run to the final of the Tata Open Maharashtra in Pune, India where he lost to Frenchman Gilles Simon.

He then lost in the first round of the Australian Open to eventual semi-finalist, Kyle Edmund of Great Britain.

Speaking ahead of the New York Open, Anderson said: “The goal is to win the event. As I’ve always said, you just have to look at the depth of men’s tennis to know that every round is a tough match. There are no gimmes at all. I’ve had a good few weeks now. And I’m excited to begin my US campaign here.”

Anderson has won three ATP titles in his career, with the last coming at the Winston-Salem Open in 2015.

He has lost in eight finals.
