Tomic out of Italian Open

Rome - Bernard Tomic has withdrawn from the Italian Open, just days after his father was barred from getting credentials to upcoming tournaments because of an assault investigation.

The Italian Open website says on Friday that the 53rd-ranked Tomic pulled out of next week's clay-court tournament in Rome and will be replaced by Xavier Malisse.

Tomic's father, John, is scheduled to go on trial in a Madrid court next Tuesday on allegations that he head-butted Bernard's training partner, Thomas Drouet, last weekend. John Tomic disputed the charges.

The ATP said it would not give John Tomic tournament credentials while it investigates what happened.

Bernard Tomic, a 20-year-old Australian, reached Wimbledon's quarter-finals in 2011.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
