Madrid - Andy Murray became the latest big name to fall at the Madrid Masters as he was beaten by sixth seed Tomas Berdych 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The world number three paid for his gruelling encounter Gilles Simon less than 24 hours earlier as he lacked the requisite energy to cope with the Czech who moves on to face either Jo-Wilfred Tsonga or Stanislas Wawrinka in the semi-finals.

Murray's defeat means that all three top seeds have been knocked out after the earlier dismissals of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Results from the seventh day of the ATP Madrid Masters and WTA Madrid Open on Thursday (x denotes seeding):

Stanislas Wawrinka (SWI x15) bt Jo-Wilfred Tsonga (FRA x7) 6-2, 6-7(9-11), 6-4

Tomas Berdych (CZE x6) bt Andy Murray (GBR x3) 7-6 (7/3), 6-4

Rafael Nadal (ESP x5) bt David Ferrer (ESP x4) 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-0

Pablo Andujar (ESP) bt Kei Nishikori (JPN x14) 6-3, 7-5

Serena Williams (USA x1) bt Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) 6-3, 0-6, 7-5

Maria Sharapova (RUS x2) bt Kaia Kanepi (EST) 6-2, 6-4

Sara Errani (ITA x7) bt Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) 6-4, 6-3

Ana Ivanovic (SRB x16) bt Angelique Kerber (GER x6) 6-3, 6-1
