Anderson progresses in Cincinnati

Cape Town - South Africa's No 1 player, Kevin Anderson, has reached the second round at the ATP Tour's Cincinnati Masters.

Anderson, the 15th-seed, beat Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-1.

Anderson will play American Jock Sock in the second round with the winner of that match likely to face former world No 1 Roger Federer in the following round.

Results on the third day of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday (x denotes seeded player).

Richard Gasquet (FRA x12) bt Nick Kyrgios (AUS) 6-2, 6-1

Sam Querrey (USA) bt John Isner (USA x11) 6-3, 7-6 (7/3)

Kevin Anderson (RSA x15) bt Leonardo Mayer (ARG) 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-1

Jared Donaldson (USA) bt Nicolas Mahut (FRA) 7-5, 6-7 (2/7), 6-2

Borna Coric (CRO) bt Alexander Zverev (GER) 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5)
