Anderson ends year in Top 20

Johannesburg - South Africa's top-ranked men's tennis player Kevin Anderson has finished the year in the Top 20 of the latest ATP singles rankings.

Anderson experienced a stellar season after he went into the year ranked 37th.

He became only the sixth South African men's singles player to be ranked in the world's Top 20 when he reached a career-best No 19.

Other South Africans ranked in the Top 20 in the past were Kevin Curren, ranked No 5 in July 1985, Wayne Ferreira, who reached No 6 in May 1995, Johan Kriek, ranked No 7 in September 1984, Cliff Drysdale, ranked 13th in May 1974, and Christo van Rensburg, who was ranked 19th in February 1988.

In March, Anderson reached another milestone at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Indian Wells by becoming the first South African since Ferreira in 1996 to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters event.

Anderson advanced to his first Grand Slam fourth round at the Australian Open, the first South African to reach the playoffs since Ferreira played in the semi-finals in 2003.

Anderson, along with Davis Cup stalwart Rik de Voest were the only South African men's players to finish the year ranked among the top 200 players in the world.
