Cape Town - Jordan Pickford was hailed as a national hero after his stunning penalty heroics ensured that England claimed their first ever shoot-out win at a World Cup finals.

Pickford became only the second England goalkeeper since David Seaman in 1998 to save a penalty in a penalty shoot-out at a major tournament as the Three Lions vanquished years of tournament hurt.

Pickford said he had done his research on Colombia and that his "power and agility" helped save Carlos Bacca's penalty in a dramatic victory.

"I did a lot of research on them, I've got power and agility," Pickford told ITV.

"I knew exactly which way they would go Falcao is the only one who didn't go his way."
