Jordan Pickford pulled off an outstanding save off of Colombia's fifth penalty-taker Carlos Bacca to inspire England in rewriting the history books to finish on the winning side of a shootout for the first time at a World Cup.

The 24-year-old was hailed as a hero by English fans for his penalty heroics as well as pulling off a number of crucial saves during regulation time.

The Three Lions have in modern football history become infamous for their nightmarish penalty record in major tournaments and for good reason.

England's years of hurt in major tournaments:

1990 - World Cup semi-final

1996 - Euros quarters (won)

1996 - Euros semi-final

1998 - World Cup Round of 16

2004 - Euros quarters

2006 - World Cup quarters

2012 - Euros quarters

2018 - World Cup Round of 16 (won)

England's historic achievement also came full circle for head coach Gareth Southgate who himself missed a decisive penalty in the Euro '96 failure.
