Vermaelen back in the fold

Cape Town - Belgium have been given a boost with the news that defender Thomas Vermaelen should be fit for their quarter-final clash against Argentina on Saturday.

The Arsenal man has been troubled by a thigh injury which forced him to miss his side's last-16 victory over the USA, but after training for a second time on Thursday it appears that he is on the road to recovery.

Elsewhere in the defence, skipper Vincent Kompany is responding positively after picking up a groin injury against the Americans.

"He looks to have made a very good recovery," coach Marc Wilmots said of his captain.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are also carrying knocks, but are expected to have fully recovered by the weekend.

Midfielder Mousa Dembele is still a doubt though as he struggles to shake off a knock sustained in the group game against South Korea.
