Washington - The US government praised South Africa for hosting an "excellent" Soccer World Cup and congratulated Spain for capturing the trophy with a 1-0 finals victory over Netherlands.

"We congratulate and thank the people of South Africa for hosting an excellent month of soccer," State Department spokeman PJ Crowley said on Monday. "It was the first time an African nation hosted the World Cup, and South Africa proved its ability to do so quite nobly."

Spain defeated the Netherlands on Sunday with a goal in the final minutes of extra time to win the country's first-ever World Cup title, keeping the Netherlands winless in three final match appearances.

"We obviously congratulate Spain, as well, for its thrilling ... win over the Netherlands," Crowley said.

The truth is very well said Bob. I am completely with you.

Great comments from Admirer, Mohapi, Michael, but especially @bob. I was a volunteer for this World Cup and I could not have been more proud about Us as a country/family. I would voluteer for any event my SA want to host and give it my full backing. I would just like to add one thing - why can't we just be happy for what was done because of the WC, road upgrades, cleaner communities, happiness, but most of all, we have the best stadiums in the world and it is on our doorsteps. JUST ENJOY IT AND TAKE A BOW, WE DESERVE IT !!!!

@ admirer, thank you the people of the world for not ignoring the World Cup because it was being staged in Africa. Thank you for ignoring the many Bobs we have in here and others elsewhere who only can ever say all things negative about our country and continent. Thank you fellow South Africans for showing your true mettle. Today, because of all of you my country men and women, I also can say I am Proudly South African.

@Bob, packup and leave. Go and find somewhere else to live. This country has no use for more negative, whinging, whining doom-sayers.

@Bob- Bob its time to move on. Its moments and chances like these for a country to get better and build from it. This was a awesome world cup. I love the new patriotism among all our people. Yes there are some bad things in our country , just like all others. Stop complaining and start to build a nation, and start at youself!
Francois7/13/2010 12:28 PM
@Bob, rather say, yes, we did a great job, see the positive side of things, because sjo, we are still united! I saw the divisions dissapear but beacuse of people like you, you will always find a way to put some wood on the fire that burnt out, get a life and see the positive instead of focusing on the negative! We are a united South Africa... :)

IT WAS PEOPLE LIKE YOU BOB WHO SAID (before we won the bid to host the SWC) that SA will never get the oppoturnity to host, and after it was announced people like you said some s**t like we wont be ready(roads, hotels, arports e.t.c) "vuvzela will damage your ears" and now that it has come to pass you are coming up with some new bull s**t. BOB YOU ARE A VERY SAD PERSON Offcourse it wasn't the normal SA on display, it was the SA in a spirit of the world cup. Even Brazil 2014 wont be the normal Brazil that's why they are starting to upgrade their infrastructures, incl. security to ensure the visitors will be protected.
Mohapi Mareletse7/13/2010 11:41 AM
Bob you are stupid man! if you want the world to see South Africa through your eyes which are blinded by hatred towards black people "racism", your statement about aggressive hawkers (which most of them are black people) bear testimony to this fact. I wonder what is it that you stand to gain about this utter nonsense, racism is everywhere (more especially from white on black) but atleast here in SA we are trying to fight it, I doubt if you have been anywhere in the world except "most probably" the small farm in Ventersdorp, Potchefstroom or Stellenbosch. where you were born. Odinary South Africans (mostly black) were happy about this WC. not only for soccer, not only because we had an opportunity to welcome the most famous people on our shores, it was not because the world cup was gonna boost the economy, It was because it was going to ease the racial tention in our country, since 2004 the LOC & the government have been trying to convince the international community & the doubting Thomases (some of them from our very own yard "which you probably are one of them") that we are capable of delivering a successfull world cup & WE DID IT! NOW DEAL WITH IT!!!
Thabiso7/13/2010 10:58 AM
What's your point Bob?
@bob7/13/2010 10:45 AM
Bob... take this from one south african to another... Have u been to england, there are more knife murders of teens on teens than there is in S.A and that's just knife attacks, but u don't hear about. Have u been to brazil (where the next world cup will be held), even a bigger drug trafficking, poverty striken, prostitutionalised, hijacking, murdering place than SA... Have you been to LA, every 25 minutes a gang member shoots another (if not an innocent victim). Do u hear about these things NO...Why not because those people look at the positive in the country, they don't look for sympathy (like most negative South Africans do), they make the best of what they can do to make their country a better place... Change YOUR attitude and help someone in our country and stop living for yourself, that will make a difference and make our lovely beautiful country a awesome place to live, visit and talk about. Not that it's not all of the latter already. I love SA and I'm proud to stand up for her....

@Bob, i agree with you that during the world cup a different south africa was on show. but have to say, that does not mean that the real south africa was not show case just a different side. perhaps it is this side that should be the one that south africa builds on going forward. indeed, racism is alive, so is xenophobia, poverty, corruption, the list goes on. however, this world cup has proved to us as south africans that in addition to having great frameworks upon which to build a better south africa such as the constitution, the ills that our country faces are not beyond us. the question is whether we have the political leadership to lead us on that path.
michael7/13/2010 10:34 AM
We did it South Africa & thanks to the visitors from all over the world who came and witnessed the South Africa flare. Again let me take this opportunity to say when you are in Rome you do what the Romans do. Our visitors also did the same thing, by bying and blowing the vuvuzelas. let me educate you again, the bee sound that people were complaining about and they din`t even bother to ask what is it all about. the bee sound is not exactly the bee sound is a song. you have to be an african to understand it.The meaning of the song is (Ge ke rata anka tsola, tsola) When I like I can take off my clothes and the second beat will be take it off. We blow the vuvuzela in this way to show our happiness.Please let us give credit were is due. We hosted the world cup it was successfull. We hosted major tournaments Rugby world cup, Cricket world cup, African nations cup. If there is a country in the world that has no problems I will love to relocate there.

Admirer, thanks for your comments, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as we South Africans did. We are equally amazed at how well it went off, and especially how crime was made "non existant" for the duration of the SWC. But please, while not wanting to rain on anyones parade, please note that the South Africa the world saw during the SWC WAS NOT (I repeart, WAS NOT) the real SA that we ordinary South Africans see. In the REAL SA, the streets (most of them) are filled with litter, aggressive hawkers, unemployed people milling around and "street children". You may not have seen any crime thanks to the 10's of thousands of extra police that suddenly appeared out of nowhere, but ask any ordinary South African if they've been a victim of serious crime, and if they havent, then a family member or friend has. And finally, don't forget that racism is alive and well in SA. You may not have seen it in the stadiums where everyone was "one", but barely has the SWC ended and there are reports of (black) police attacking a white person and saying (in front of witnesses) that they will "kill all f____ing whites. This is not some radical left-wing nut-case fringe group, this is THE POLICE! SA benefited enormously from the SWC, and its everyones wish that the SWC nirvana persists afterwards, but the reality is that the world DID NOT see the real SA during the SWC.

This world cup has made me so proud to be a South African. Congrats to the excellent organizers and the wonderful people of this beautiful country that has made this such a memorable time in our short history as a nation. May we go on from here to build a truly united peaceful prosperous country.

@admirer, your positive feedback is much appreciated, we hope you will come back to visit SA & especially our beautiful Cape Town. Its time for SA to realise its full potential & I believe sport is the major catalyst to achieve this.

@Admirer7/13/2010 9:19 AM
Thanks for the great letter - as a South African it is nice to hear that our country is appreciated. Please return for holidays! From a proud South African.

Thank you for the compliments Admirer.

I attended my first world cup as a 25 year old in 1982 in Spain. I have left my home to attended every world cup since, except fro France 98 & Germany 2006, which I travelled to and fro as they are close to my home in England. I arrived in Souh Africa a week before the start of the tourney, and I stayed on even after England were booted out, as I still wanted to watch the semis and the the finals live. Now in my 50's, I will be honest and say that South Africa 2010 has been the best world cup I have ever been to. There are so many positives that I find ir hard to single-out one. yes there are always hic-ups here & there, but these happen everywhere. Forget the highly exaggerated crime warnings; THIS TOURNAMENT WAS A BLAST!!!
