Township smoke bothers NZ

Johannesburg – The New Zealand soccer team had to cut short their first training session for the SWC 2010 after smoke from a nearby township bothered the players too much.

The team arrived on Sunday in South Africa and practiced on Monday night at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton on the East Rand.

They were, however, only able to train for about an hour due to the unpleasant circumstances, reported telegraph.co.uk.

The team, which have the nickname All Whites, stayed at the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, also on the East Rand.

"It's not ideal but it is out of our control. Some players will have to go back. There are a few players that we will not expose to this," said coach Ricki Herbert to journalists with regards to players who suffered from asthma, among others.

"A little jog and stretching exercises – it (the training) will be very short, not what we had planned."

Herbert said the shorter training session would not influence the team's SWC 2010 preparations.

New Zealand play their first match on Tuesday against Slovakia at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium near Rustenburg.
