Toshack: Eng can win SWC

Johannesburg - John Toshack believes England will be amongst the three leading contenders to lift the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Wales boss will lock horns with Fabio Capello's team in their Euro 2012 qualifying group alongside Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montenegro from next September.

But before that the former Real Madrid manager expects England, Spain and one of the African nations to be challenging strongly for glory in June and July.

Toshack said: "Can Capello help England realise their potential this summer? We have to wait and see really. Before that it was a bad time for England, not even qualifying for Euro 2008.

"At other times, England have beaten teams they should beat. By their standards, given the groups they have been in, you would expect them to do well.

"But when they have got to the higher level, it hasn't always happened for them and, even now, over the last few years, I think when they have played the top sides they have lost to Spain and France.

"We shall have to see how they do this summer. A lot of things come into consideration but, this time around, I would look and say England would be one of my top three for the World Cup.

"If I had to pick three for this World Cup, they would be one of them. I also like the way the Spanish side are playing and I think an African side will get to the semi-finals at least.

"I would put England and Spain in there - and you would never bet against Brazil when big tournaments come around but I think England this time around can be up there with a real strong challenge."

Toshack is hoping a successful World Cup for England might work to Wales' advantage when they try to qualify from their Euro group.

He said: "It would be nice for us if they brought the cup back and paraded it around Wembley in September - and we went there and spoilt the party a bit.

"I think they would settle for that and I think we would as well!

"All the teams in the group are going to motivated to play against England, particularly if they have a very good World Cup, which I think they will."

Toshack will consult with his Wales players in deciding whether to play their home qualifier with England in the Millennium Stadium or at a smaller and more intimidating ground.

The greater revenue would come from holding the match at the Millennium Stadium with its capacity of nearly 74,500 and would mean less headaches in terms of security.

But Toshack admits other options to consider are the new Cardiff City Stadium (capacity 27,000) and Swansea's Liberty Stadium (20,500) where they host Sweden in a friendly international on March 3.

Toshack said: "Where will we play England? We don't know yet. Things have changed a bit recently for us.

"We have got two other stadiums now. We were well pleased with the treatment we got from the Cardiff people when we played Scotland there recently.

"Swansea have a new stadium as well and we have been treated well there and play Sweden there shortly.

"It is early days yet. We have a fixture meeting on March 15 when it will be decided what dates we play but you don't have to announce the venue until 90 days before a fixture.

"I will be interested to get the players views on that subject as well so we have got a little bit of time to decide over that one."

DUDE!!!!!! With spelling and grammar mistakes like those in your comment, how do you manage to work in an English country? Do you speak the language like you write?
The Voice of Reason2/9/2010 6:18 PM
As good as England may be, they won't win the World Cup. They have a fatal flaw, and that is their inability to win a penalty shoot out. They have never won one at a WC. Since penalty shoot outs were introduced, Brazil is the only country to win the WC without going trough one. I see England storming through the group phase, and choking in the round of 16 or quarters. @ 'To Larry', you do know that Andy Murray is Scottish, right?

I can`t believe half you id!ots don`t think England have a chance. On paper they are one of the strongest teams around. They do have a problem in the big tournaments for what ever reason (like the All Blacks and Proteas) but that has to end sometime. Remember, the English F team will still give Bafunny Bafunny 5-0.

Dude, Croatia is one of the big guns. Are you forgetting hope well they do in nearly every competition? I am saffa that lives in the UK, due to work. I get the benefit of watching all major leagues every weekend because we get the premiership during the day and the la liga in the evening plus the German, French and Italian leagues. I am football mad and watch all these leagues with much interest (and been fortunate to get to a few games here in the UK and on the continent) so I know there a really good players out there that people do not know. All I am saying is you cant right England off. The fact is the premiership is in the top two leagues in the world. In the top teams from that league most of their best players are English: Liverpool - gerrad, man u -Rooney, Chelsea - terry and lampard, the list goes on. Whether people like it or not they have a really good side, maybe not as good as Spain or Brazil but anything can happen in a knock out competition, I mean look Greece, they won the euro with a bunch of donkeys. So all I am saying anything can happen and they have the potential but whether they live up to it or not is a different story. You just can’t right them off along with Germany, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Brazil and maybe even Ivory Coast.

Now i just found myself an english muppet. Funny how this no name id!ot leaves the english soccer prowess en focuses on England desperately hanging on 4 a draw in the test series against SA, Murray getting torn apart in the Aussie Open final, Bokke demolishing England twice in one RWC INC a 34 - 0 white wash. How bout u identify your ugly self & focus on your english soccer mates.
Bemused Bystander2/9/2010 12:10 PM
At Darren...er, that was Croatia pal and not one of the traditional big guns in a game that actaully matters. Seems to me that your knowledge of football and appreciation thereof extends only as far as what you watch on Sunday afteroons. There is much much more to football than what Supersport makes us think there is and many many players as good, and better, who play in leagues that we never are exposed to

U must be crazy to think England can win World Cup in Africa. Bye bye and that's why i think these soccer analyst must stop analsing lies. Ta
Joe 2/9/2010 11:48 AM
ya ya ya, the english press at it again... just as they where goin to win it every year after 1966.....
Dr Steve Brule2/9/2010 11:48 AM
I seriously doubt England will get far, they always choke and aren't that good to begin with. As for Joemans comment, get that chip off your shoulder, since when are the English, Dutch Mans kind, and as much I would love to see an African team do it (especially Bafana), I seriously doubt they will, because they never have and I don't see it happening for a while, just look at the standard of Euro 2008 compared to the African cup last month, it's like day and night. And most of the players in the Barclays Premier League are not African. (althought Drogba is my favourite striker) As for my prediction, look out for Serbia, they might surprise some.
Bemused Bystander2/9/2010 11:44 AM
Yeah right! The perpetual over rated and under achievers? Give me a break; English foot ball is not as strong as people like to believe. The semi-finalists will be made up of four of the usual suspects : Germany, Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Spain etc
Darren Burke2/9/2010 11:38 AM
Is everyone forgetting that England tore Croatia a part twice? Are we forgetting that England has some of the best players in the world, like Gerard, Rooney, Cole and terry? Plus they have a great manager. they are def one of the best teams in the FOOTBALL world cup (please stop saying soccer, we are not American!) must I also remind you that all the major leagues in the world have a lot of foreigners, how many Spanish play for barca and real Madrid? and there isn’t that many Africans in the English league, very few in the top teams.
@ Joeman2/9/2010 11:37 AM
Nobody needs to knock Africans because they do such a good job of it themselves by acting like complete idiots. Blaming everyone but themselves for Africa when it is their own 'brothers' who rape and destroy a country while the masses toy-toy and chant like buffoons. Soon SA will be exactly like Zimbabwe and that is reality. No sympathy from me, that is for sure.
dutch man@joe man2/9/2010 11:25 AM
true the english league is strong but not because of the african players, sure they make a small contribution to the good football played in england but i can only count 5 maybe 8 really good african players the rest are not good at all... your positive wishful thinking is good though keep it up your team will need it when you play the power houses of football like the teams i mentioned earlier
THE BEAST2/9/2010 11:15 AM
@JOHN TOSHBACK! Keep on dreaming for the rest of your. It will never ever happen in your lifetime.
MandlakaZulu2/9/2010 11:09 AM
@dutch man - Just like Luke Watson said, dutchmen are stupid, you must be a rugby or cricket fan otherwise you'll know that England are bleddy overrated as always ahead of the WC. Remember what Portugal did to them in Germany? Remember what Argentina did to them in South Korea/Japan? and we go on before that. I think they last won the WC in 1966,same thing will happen this time around. The English are good for nothing when it comes to sport, just like your country Holland, orange tossers.
haha2/9/2010 10:36 AM
the story is placed by the sa pr people because the last possible hope for swc visitors is england. bafana is a contender because we have the fewest foreign players in our league!!!!!
Joeman @dutch man2/9/2010 10:36 AM
As usual you just had to knock africans and praise those of your kind. You people never get enough, do you? I see some haters wiping rotten egg on their faces in June/ July. England won't come near the podium. They may have a strong league due to foreigners(majority of them being africans) but are very weak as a national team.
To Larry2/9/2010 10:31 AM
Seems like you have an extremely big chip on your shoulder. If I recall England have recently drawn the cricket test series with SA, having won the One Day Series. They were also in the last Rugby World Cup Final and count Andy Murray in their tennis ranks. Please get a life, take your head out of your ass and stop showing your ignorance. If ever there was a team that represents what SA has become it is Bafana Bafana ... lazy, arrogant, self centered glory boys that are an embarrassment to soccer.
Zolani 2/9/2010 10:23 AM
Not while there are so many Foreigners playing for there clubs, i back Holland
dutch man2/9/2010 10:17 AM
not sure why larry and sean dont agree, but if you know your football you would know they are a really strong team under fabio and they do have as good a chance as any other favourite like portugal, holland, germany and brazil to win the world cup although he was incorrect by implying that some african country will make a bid to win the world cup....i dont see any real challenge coming from any african team to be honest.
Meka2/9/2010 10:08 AM
The english? win the world cup! Bwahahahahahahahahahaha... good one! just made my day!
Larry2/9/2010 9:57 AM
John Toshack you must b smoking your socks dude. The Pommies are an overrated bunch who will never amount to anything in a SWC. Y the F#*k does everything have 2 revolve around englishmen, useless in soccer/cricket/rugby/tennis but the is always this huha about them but they win nothing.
SEAN2/9/2010 9:35 AM
Whishfull thinking as usual !
