Zurich - Spain returned to the top of the world football rankings issued on Wednesday by the ruling body FIFA in the wake of their first Soccer World Cup triumph.

But the 2006 winners Italy crashed out of the top-10 and the runners up from four ago, France, even out of the top 20 after both went out in the group stage of the tournament in South Africa.

Spain, who had lost first place to Brazil a few months ago, returned to the top with 1 883 points with the World Cup triumph on Sunday, 1-0 over the Netherlands. The Dutch moved from fourth to second with 1 659 points while quarter-final victims Brazil dropped from first to third with 1 536 points.

Semi-finalists Uruguay shot from 16th to a ranking best sixth place, Egypt moved from 14th to ninth even though they did not play at the World Cup, and Chile climbed from 18th to 10th.

The other top 10 teams are Germany (fourth), Argentina (fifth) and England (seventh) and Portugal (eighth).

On the other side of the spectrum, Italy plunged from sixth to 11th, non-World Cup team Croatia dropped from 10th to 15th place and France even crashed 12 places, from ninth to 21st.

Top 10 FIFA rankings:

1.  Spain 1 883 points
2.  Netherlands 1 659
3.  Brazil 1 536
4.  Germany 1 464
5.  Argentina 1 289
6.  Uruguay 1 152
7.  England 1 125
8.  Portugal 1 062
9.  Egypt 1 053
10.  Chile 988

Hi guys I think we should consider the achievements that are gained by the great egyptian team not only whether egypt participate in wc or not. However I hope that my egyptian team participates in the next wc as we really deserve this . .

I AM SURPRISED THE FIFA RANKING IS NOT SO RATIONAL WITH REGARD TO GHANA'S TEAM PERFORMANCE. GHANA PLAYED THE CLASSIC FOOTBALL THE WORLD NEEDS TODAY . IF YOU CONSIDER POSSESSION, GHANA POSSESSED EVERY ENCOUNTER. THE TEAM IS WELL ORGANISED THAN MANY OTHERS EVEN THOSE WHICH REPRESENTED IN THE WORLD CUP. THINK OF REVIEWING IT TO MEET THE TRUE VALUE OF FOOTBALL IN THE WORLD TODAY.

Egypt deserve the 9th place , no doubt !!! simply because Egypt won the last 3 successive African cup the ranking depends on the aggregate results and after excluding the points of the previous wc in Germany , egypt climbed to the top ten .

@REALIST7/14/2010 12:29 PM
Poor bubbles are you still crying with shame because we hosted SWC. Shame on you, we moved the rankings to 66 if not mistaken-we can only build it from here. Shame on you, eat your humble pie.

zack7/14/2010 11:42 AM
wow..bafana is now ranked 66th..well done boyssssss
mxo7/14/2010 11:41 AM
Only a moron take these ratings serious. Look at Egypt never even qualified for the WC but in the top 10. The less I say about England the better
Zolile7/14/2010 11:35 AM
I am happy with Spain on top, but thinks that Germany should be ahead of Brazil. The Germans had a superb tournament and deserve some credit, and so was Ghana. As for Egypt in the top 10 while Ghana is outside, it boggles me.

this story blows! i opned it cause i wanted to find out where our boys will be. as a local news site, you should know who the audience is. yes spain is no 1, but then i'm more intereted in the story of how we improved.
sokkor7/14/2010 11:14 AM

Matt7/14/2010 11:14 AM
Bafana went from 83 to 66, not bad...
REALIST7/14/2010 11:07 AM
What about Bafana Bafana from 84 to 83.
PUNAS7/14/2010 11:05 AM
AND BAFANA BAFA?????
CaptMorgan7/14/2010 11:04 AM
Funny how you forgot to mention that Bafana climbed 17 spots to 66 ...
Penguin7/14/2010 11:01 AM
Why did the article not even mention SA's situation? Surely it should have been anticipated that readers would like to know that SA moved up 17 places to number 66 (or is this a fact rather ignored?)
Paakwesi7/14/2010 11:01 AM
this current fifa ranking is absurd they will have to review it and publish a more fare and and reflective rankings. How can England be ranked fourth after their abysmal performance and Egypt ranked ninth after their non participation? There really is a problem with this rankings and something should be done about it.
