Johannesburg - South African football legend John "Shoes" Moshoeu says the World Cup is a great chance for Africa to show it is a force in the global game.
Moshoeu, who won 73 international caps and was part of the 1998 World Cup finals squad, said: "It's important. It's for us to pull it off and leave an everlasting legacy, and to show the world that Africa is like any other continent and South Africa is like any other country."
"We as African players, have a stake in the development of football, in the improvement of football across the world. We've got African players, the Drogbas, the Essiens playing in Europe," he said.
"We tend to be lost in the whole hype. Africans, they tend not to get a piece of that cake.
"Everything happens in Europe all the time and if we really pull it off and do well in this tournament I think that should be like an eye opener for the world to say 'guys, we have to bring these people into our fold.'
"We shouldn't be forgotten and we are a force to be reckoned with. And we're going to do it in an African way," said Moshoeu, who played for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa and had spells in Turkey.
"If we can win or go as far as the quarter or semi-finals that will be a very, very colossal achievement," he said.
Moshoeu said that while his heart was with South Africa, his head said England or Spain would lift the trophy.
